Every year since 2018, ever since I learnt what an OKR (Objective and Key Results) is from John Doerr, I would sit down and write my personal OKRs for the next 6–12months. This gave me the clarity and focus that I needed to be meticulous with my personal objectives just like the professional and business goals.
Fast forward to today, this was the best idea I learnt and adopted in my life. It was spectacular and genius. It gave me the accountability and perseverance I needed to keep going no matter how hard the circumstances were. And it continues to keep the candle lit up.
2018–2021 Updates:
These personal OKRs became my north star to make sure I was prioritizing the right things in life.
When I reflect back to my 2021 personal OKRs, I can see this as crystal clear as the light shining by the window in a crisp winter morning. I am proud and grateful for all the amazing moments in 2021 and it is setting my path forward in 2022.
Lovingkindness in every moment
Our leader from my first job in the US, shares his annual family update via email and I am humbled to continue to receive the note. It’s a beautiful gesture to show you care, even though we haven’t connected in 10years. As part of his note, he asked how I am doing and I shared the following:
Div: 2021 Highlights
I’m grateful for this year, I learned a lot about myself: true self-reflection and discovery.
Even though I live by myself, I found unity in people coming together from around the world and I’m amazed by the outpour of love and support this year. There is so much power and compassion in community.
got my US citizenship and officially now Div Manickam. A proud and humble moment. Simplification in everything I am: feels great to move from a Given Name (First + Middle) of 19 letters to just 3 — Div :)
after 10 years in San Francisco Bay Area, moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in June 2020. My marriage of 10 years has come to an amicable end and morphed into a beautiful friendship.
self-published my first ebook on 12.21.2021 — A broken teacup: filling the cracks with mindfulness essentialism and self-care (to share my journey with stress and anxiety in the past year).
As I reflect on the 2021 OKRs, these will carry forward into 2022 as these goals are something I will continue to build on. I like the simple exercise of start, stop, continue to see how I am doing.
Start: #3 - Spanish (didn’t do much in 2021, so this is now on my calendar to focus and learn to speak Spanish. I joined HelloTalk yesterday to build accountability and learn from native speakers.
Stop: #9 — the SF market is still not good, so this may not happen in 2022.
Continue: everything else on the list is good to continue and reinforce as a mindful practice. #6 - as I self published my first book, now it’s time to work on the next book and share my journey on Authentic Leadership.
Here is the GROW and personal OKRs template for reference.
