Our job and role as a Product Marketing (PMM) is always changing. Today, PMMs deal with tons of data, a huge need to make things personal for each customer, and tough competition. But there's a big opportunity in all this: Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI makes us work much better. This is especially true for companies that have a lot of unique data, like insights from user engagement and behavior.

AI in Product Marketing

Simply put, AI in Product Marketing means using AI tools (like machine learning, which helps computers learn; natural language processing, to understand language; and predictive analytics, to guess what might happen next) to make daily tasks easier, find deeper insights, and enhance PMM tasks.

In this frame of reference, as a product marketing leader in B2B SaaS and data/analytics, my career is all about solving problems and finding unique value. What is clear is that AI is a true partner.

It helps PMMs stop just reacting to things and start planning ahead using data. This frees up PMMs from manual data work so they can spend more time on big-picture thinking, new ideas, and creative projects. The main goal is to make our work have a bigger impact on the company.

The core philosophy, is "Human-Centered AI." This isn't about AI doing for humans, or humans just assisting AI. It's a symbiotic relationship where AI enhances our fundamental human abilities.

Let’s look at this through how we think, create, communicate, see, and move.
For me, who lives and breathes product, design and marketing, understanding these boundaries is everything.

The World AI Summit in San Francisco reinforced that AI can drastically help us:

• Think Smarter: Process complex info, ask relevant questions, sharpen judgment. Think "benevolent" and "conscious" AI.

• Create Impact: Act as a co-creator, turning data into actionable insights, building "data moats" for innovation.

• Impact: How much will this project impact each user? (Use a scoring scale, e.g., 5 = massive impact, 1 = low impact)

• Confidence: How confident are you in your estimates for Reach and Impact? (Express as a percentage, e.g., 100% = high confidence, 50% = low confidence)

• Effort: How much effort will this project require? (Estimate in person-months or story points)

• Context: As the product team at a SaaS company, we were struggling to prioritize features for new customers. We had numerous ideas, but limited development resources.

• Application: We used RICE scoring to evaluate each feature idea. We estimated that feature X would reach 80% of new users, have a "high" impact on conversion (scored as 4), 90% confident in these estimates, and it would take 3 weeks (0.75 person-months) to implement.

• Result: The RICE scores helped the team objectively compare different features and prioritize those that would deliver the most value to new users with the least amount of effort. We prioritized a feature that streamlined the workflow process, which led to increase in conversions.

Step 2: Team Capacity

Once we have RICE scores for our projects, it's crucial to assess our team's capacity to deliver them. This involves:

• Estimate effort: Work with our engineering and development team to estimate the effort required for each project in a consistent unit (e.g., person-weeks, story points).

• Determine team capacity: Calculate our team's available capacity for the planning period (e.g., quarter). Consider factors like team size, vacations, and other commitments. Aim for a sustainable utilization rate (e.g., 80%) to allow for unexpected tasks and prevent burnout.

• Match projects to capacity: Compare the total estimated effort of prioritized projects with the team's capacity. Adjust the roadmap as needed by moving projects to future quarters or removing them from the portfolio.

An example that made me smile was Insight Timer, and how it communicates value: "The world's largest free library of guided meditations."

What made this memorable is simplicity, boldness, and addressing common user friction points.

2. "free library": (game-changer and the smile-inducer) In a market, saturated with subscription-based meditation apps, leading with "free library" removes the barrier to entry – cost. It communicates accessibility and generosity as values.

3. "guided meditations": Manages expectations and ensure users know exactly what they're getting into.

It highlights competitive advantage (size and cost) while directly speaking to user desires (variety and accessibility).

It's not just a list of features; it's a promise of abundant, no-cost exploration, and makes a user feel like they've found a valuable, user-first resource.

Q2. Tell us about a time you had to significantly pivot product positioning/messaging due to market feedback. What triggered it and what was the new strategy?

Early in my career, we launched a B2B analytics platform positioned as a tool for data experts, emphasizing its complex analytical capabilities. Our initial traction was slow. The trigger was direct feedback from customers who, while needing insights, lacked the deep expertise we were targeting. They felt intimidated.

We pivoted to position as an "insights platform for business users," highlighting ease of use and actionable recommendations, without a data science background.

The new GTM focused on empowering business decisions with data, using simpler language and showcasing user-friendly visualizations. This shift increased adoption.

Q3. Describe a specific message or narrative you crafted that had a surprisingly strong impact (positive or negative). What did you learn about connecting with the audience?

I crafted a campaign for a developer tool that focused heavily on its cutting-edge technology and technical specifications. We assumed developers would be drawn to the most advanced features. However, the response was ok.

We then shifted the narrative to focus on time savings and increased productivity, emphasizing how it would free up their time to focus on complex tasks. This resonated much more strongly.

I learned that even with a technically savvy audience, the core message needs to address their immediate pain points and aspirations, not just the features themselves.

Beyond surveys, we conducted "a day in the life" persona interviews, shadowing potential customers to observe workflows, frustrations, and tools used. This immersive approach revealed nuances we wouldn't have captured through questionnaires.

Example: For a collaboration and team communication software, the biggest pain point wasn't just task management, but the stress caused by fragmented communication across multiple platforms.

This led to a positioning breakthrough emphasizing "seamless collaboration and reduced communication chaos," which resonated deeply with our target audience.

A key market signal is when win rates against competition start to decline, and the reasons cited by lost deals consistently point to a mismatch in perceived value or understanding of your offering.
